Recently, I was asked, 'What was the best advice you were given when you started as a BT or BCBA?' My answer is straightforward: I focus more on actions than words.
The most valuable lessons I learned from RBTs and BCBAs early in my career came from observing their behavior. The best practitioners consistently displayed patience and flexibility. This approach wasn’t just applied in their interactions with clients; it also extended to working collaboratively with parents and other professionals, such as occupational therapists (OT), physical therapists (PT), and speech therapists (ST).
Behavior change takes time, and each individual’s needs are unique. The key to effective practice is being adaptable and willing to adjust strategies based on those individual needs.
