The Levels of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a complex developmental condition that manifests in various ways across different individuals. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5), categorizes ASD into three levels based on the amount of support needed.

Level 1 - Requiring Support: Individuals with Level 1 ASD struggle with social situations, often having difficulty starting interactions and responding to others.

Level 2 - Requiring Substantial Support: Those at Level 2 face significant challenges in both verbal and nonverbal communication, affecting their ability to interact socially.

Level 3 - Requiring Very Substantial Support: Individuals at this level have severe communication and social deficits, with highly restricted and repetitive behaviors.
