Alternate Assessments
STAAR Alternate 2: This is Texas's alternate assessment for students with the most significant cognitive disabilities. The STAAR Alternate 2 assesses students based on alternate academic achievement standards. The decision to use this assessment is made by the student's ARD committee, based on specific eligibility criteria and the student's educational needs. It is designed to measure student progress in a way that aligns with their abilities and instructional level.
IEP Team's Role: The student's IEP team plays a crucial role in determining the appropriate assessment path. If it is determined that a student cannot participate in the general assessment even with accommodations, the team must document the reasons and outline why the alternate assessment is appropriate. This ensures that the assessment accurately reflects the student's knowledge and skills without being unfairly challenging (Texas Education Agency) (Partners Resource Network).
These policies ensure that all students, including those with disabilities, are assessed fairly and given the opportunity to demonstrate their learning in ways that accommodate their needs. For more detailed guidelines, the Texas Education Agency provides comprehensive resources and documentation.
