State’s Rules for Graduation Options for Students with Disabilities

  • Standard Diploma: Students with disabilities can earn a standard high school diploma by meeting the same credit requirements as their non-disabled peers. They must also pass the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) with or without accommodations.

  • Modified Curriculum and Endorsements: Recent changes allow an Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) committee to modify the curriculum for students with disabilities if the changes do not alter the educational outcomes significantly. This means students can earn endorsements even if some modifications are made to their coursework.

  • Graduation by IEP: In certain cases, students with significant cognitive disabilities can graduate based on the goals and requirements set in their IEP. This option is tailored to the student's individual abilities and progress rather than the standard credit requirements.

  • Certificates of Completion: For students who meet their IEP goals but do not complete the standard credit requirements, a certificate of completion may be awarded. This certificate recognizes the student's achievements and readiness for post-secondary life or vocational training.
