Special Education Placement Options in Texas

In Texas, special education placement options are designed to meet the diverse needs of students with disabilities. The primary goal is to ensure that these students are educated in the least restrictive environment (LRE) appropriate to their needs.

Here are the key placement options available:

  1. General Education Classroom: Students with disabilities receive instruction alongside their non-disabled peers, with appropriate supports and services such as co-teaching, aides, or specialized instruction within the general education setting.

  2. Resource Room: For part of the day, students receive specialized instruction in a separate room, focusing on specific skills or subjects while spending the rest of their time in the general education classroom.

  3. Self-Contained Classroom: Students spend the majority or all of the school day in a classroom specifically designed to provide specialized instruction for students with significant disabilities. These classrooms typically have a lower student-to-teacher ratio and provide a highly structured environment.

  4. Special Schools: For students whose needs cannot be adequately met in a regular school setting, special schools offer comprehensive services tailored to specific disabilities, such as schools for the deaf or visually impaired.

  5. Homebound or Hospital Services: These are provided for students who cannot attend school due to medical conditions. Instruction is delivered in the home or hospital setting.

  6. Nonpublic Placements: In some cases, students may be placed in nonpublic or private institutions if the public school cannot provide the necessary services. These placements are typically funded by the public school system and are determined through the IEP process.

The Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) committee, which includes parents, educators, and specialists, is responsible for determining the most appropriate placement for each student. The placement decision is based on the student's individual needs, the goals outlined in their Individualized Education Program (IEP), and the requirement to provide education in the LRE (Navigate Life Texas) (Texas Education Agency) (Texas Deaf Outreach) (Texas Project First).
