Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) Parental Participation Important Questions: District/Schools Must

• Notify parents at every stage of the special education process, including referral, evaluation, IEP development, and placement decisions.


• Obtain informed consent from parents for initial evaluations and consent for the initial placement of the student in special education.


• Before a student can receive any special education and related services, consent is required.


• If parents do not provide consent, the district/school cannot place or provide special education services to the student.
