Individualized Family Service Plan (IFSP)

In the United States, the Individualized Family Service Plan (IFSP) is used in all states and U.S. territories as part of the early intervention services mandated under Part C of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). This federal legislation ensures that children from birth to age 3 who have developmental delays or disabilities receive the appropriate early intervention services and supports, regardless of the state in which they reside.

The IDEA requires each state to have a comprehensive early intervention system that includes the development and implementation of IFSPs for eligible children and their families. This ensures a consistent approach to early intervention across the country, while allowing states the flexibility to tailor their services to meet local needs and circumstances.

Each state's early intervention program may have specific names and structures, but they all adhere to the federal guidelines set forth by IDEA Part C, ensuring that families have access to the necessary supports and services during the critical early years of their child's development.
