How much input should a patient with ASD Level 2 have in their care plan?

For individuals with Level 2 Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), who require substantial support, the approach to involving them in healthcare decisions can be more nuanced. While they may face more significant challenges in communication and social interactions, their input into their care plan is still crucial and should be facilitated as much as possible.

Healthcare providers might need to employ more specialized strategies to ensure that these individuals can participate in decision-making. This could include:

Using Alternative Communication Tools: For those who might struggle with traditional conversation, tools like picture boards, simplified language, or digital communication aids might be helpful.

Involving Caregivers: Caregivers and family members who understand the patient’s ways of communicating and interpreting information can play a vital role in helping to convey the individual’s needs and preferences to healthcare providers.

Consistency and Patience: Engaging with the same healthcare professionals over time can help in building a more effective communication channel, as these professionals become more familiar with the individual’s specific needs and communication styles.

Legal and Supportive Frameworks: Depending on their cognitive abilities and legal status, some individuals with Level 2 ASD might have a legally appointed guardian to help make decisions. However, it's important that this is balanced with efforts to maximize the individual's autonomy and respect their personal preferences as much as possible.

The goal is always to honor the autonomy of the individual to the greatest extent feasible, ensuring their rights and preferences are respected in the healthcare process.

Note: There is no one size fits all with ASD. I use the levels here as a placeholder for the ability to consent.
