For individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), including those at Level 1, who have the capacity to make informed decisions, their involvement in their healthcare decisions should be actively supported just like any other patient. Level 1 ASD, often described as requiring support, generally implies that the person can communicate effectively and understand the implications of different treatment options with some assistance.
Healthcare providers should ensure that communications are clear and accessible, adapting their explanations and discussions to meet the cognitive and communicative needs of the patient. This might include using simpler language, visual aids, or more time to ensure understanding.
The legal and ethical frameworks prioritize the patient's autonomy, and efforts should be made to involve individuals with ASD in decisions about their healthcare to the extent that they are able to participate. This approach not only respects their rights but also tends to lead to more effective and satisfactory care outcomes.
Note: There is no one size fits all with ASD. I use the levels here as a placeholder for the ability to consent. This is not something level 1 garentees or the other levels make impossible but it is a good starting place for the conversation.
