Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD): Functional Communication and Choice

Enabling Choice Through Functional Communication

Expressing Preferences: Functional communication equips individuals with ASD to express their likes, dislikes, needs, and desires effectively. This could be as simple as choosing between different activities or as complex as making decisions about their daily routines or living arrangements. Without functional communication, these preferences might go unrecognized or unexpressed.

Participation in Decision Making: With the ability to communicate functionally, individuals can participate more actively in personal decision-making processes. This participation can range from educational settings, where they might choose which classes or activities they engage in, to personal relationships and interactions.

Independence and Control: Effective communication tools and strategies allow individuals with ASD to have more control over their environment and daily life. For instance, being able to request a break or refuse an activity using an AAC device or other communication method can significantly reduce frustration and help manage behavioral issues.

Self-Advocacy: Functional communication is crucial for self-advocacy. By expressing their needs and concerns, individuals with ASD can better advocate for themselves in social, educational, and medical contexts. This is especially important in situations where their rights and well-being are at stake.
